Mistral signs deals with Mozilla, Total

✎ Story body

One company, two partnerships, two opposite pitches: in the browser it sells keeping nothing; in oil and gas it sells going deep.

What happened

Mistral announced a partnership with Mozilla. Smart Window, the browsing-assistance feature in beta in Firefox, will run on Mistral's models, launching first in France and North America and expanding to the UK and Germany by year end. Mistral highlights models tuned to regional languages and dialects, and says conversations are not stored on Mozilla's servers by default, with Mistral itself agreeing to retain no data. Separately, French oil major TotalEnergies is reported to have signed with Mistral to jointly develop AI models for oil and gas development — a three-year contract estimated at around 100 million euros.

Why it matters

Put side by side, the two contracts show what Mistral sells inverting by customer. In the browser the headline promise is that nothing is kept, a clean point of difference for European users. On the industrial side the value runs the other way: the more a model is built down into one customer's operations, the more it is worth — which only works if that customer hands the data over. One reading is that a European model company needs deals of the second size to stay independent. What TotalEnergies is handing over, and how much of it, is not disclosed.

What to watch

Whether the no-retention terms on Smart Window survive the expansion into the UK and Germany unchanged. And whether an industrial contract at the TotalEnergies scale stays a one-off or is followed by others in energy and manufacturing.
