Mistral raises €3B; Google exec joins

The week Mistral raised €3 billion, the person it brought in ran energy sourcing for Google's European datacenters.

What happened

On September 8, Mistral announced a €3 billion Series D. The company frames the raise around making sovereign, open-weight AI the technology frontier. A day later, Marc Oman — who led energy sourcing strategy for Google's European datacenters — was reported to be joining a new unit, Mistral Compute. During his time at Google he signed long-term renewable power agreements totalling more than 2GW across nine countries.

Why it matters

"Sovereign AI" has mostly been argued as a question of whether model weights are published. What Mistral secured alongside the money is not someone who builds models but someone who locks in electricity on long contracts. The company plans to hold more than 1GW of European compute by 2030, and doing that itself runs into land and power procurement before it runs into anything else. Hiring the person who did that work at Google for 12 years places the near-term contest on facilities rather than on weights. Note: how much of the raise goes to compute has not been disclosed.

What to watch

Which country Mistral Compute signs its first power purchase agreement in. Whether the 1GW target by 2030 is built or leased from existing operators.
