✎ Story body
VS Code is previewing a feature that picks which AI model to use for each task automatically.
What happened
Microsoft added "HydraFusion" to VS Code 1.140 as a research preview. It orchestrates AI models from several vendors and chooses an execution pattern using capability signals for reasoning, code generation, debugging and tool use. Three patterns are offered: Single, Cascade and Critique. It is available to GitHub Copilot Pro, Pro+, Business and Enterprise users; Business and Enterprise need an administrator to enable it.
Why it matters
The aim is to keep quality high while cutting cost, shifting model choice from the user to the tool. But it is still a preview, and no figures showing how well quality and cost are balanced were found in the source.
What to watch
Whether Business and Enterprise administrators actually switch it on. New models join the pool after evaluation once Copilot supports them, so how quickly the pool changes will show whether automatic selection helps in real development.
