Microsoft Research said it is broadening access to Skala, which speeds up density functional theory (DFT) predictions. The only other Microsoft item that surfaced the same week was an expanded partnership with solar cell maker Qcells - one official post and one trade report, a thin base.
DFT underpins materials and drug discovery, so keeping accuracy while cutting time changes how many candidates a lab can screen. But the evidence here is a single official post, and the Qcells item is about power procurement; that these moved as one current is not established.
Whether independent researchers reproduce the benchmarks, and whether Skala shows up inside existing DFT workflows. The scope and terms of the access also bear watching.
